Gush Emunim is an Israeli fundamentalist movement dedicated to bringing the Messiah. It attempts to preempt secular Zionism and its symbols and is highly active in right-wing politics. Its greatest crisis was the withdrawal from the Sinai, since settlement of the historical land of Israel is its prime religious and political objective. Settlement will mark the beginning of the messianic process, according to prophecy. It is in large part a reaction to the conditions of exile.
